Transitioning the main video player at Vox Media from Ooyala to Brightcove gave us the opportunity to customize the design of the player. This would include everything from the control bar to video thumbnails to next click and ad experiences.
Given that there would be multiple sites, each with their own visual identity and style, featuring the new player creating a cohesive yet customized experience was important. The image below shows how varied the player designs were from site to site.
After comparing the player usages across brands I worked on a system that could be implemented on each brand. Keeping the video icon and text location in the same location provided consistency while providing the option to change the color and font allowed for brand personalization.
